This event, in collaboration with the San Francisco Public Library and the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, is aimed at increasing awareness about the Cultural Revolution that took place 50 years ago, when approximately 20 million of China’s urban youth of middle – and high-school age were sent into the countryside to participate in the “up to the mountains and down to the villages” movement.
A pictorial exhibit to what life was like for some of the sent-down youth will be on display and some sent-down youth will be on hand to share their stories and answer questions. In addition, the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will perform parts of the “Ask the Sky and the Earth” movement, which tells the story of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in song and has been performed all over the world.
